Overview

Visual Language Services (VLS) is part of the statewide Division of Outreach Services at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind.

Visual Language Services encompass support in two key areas:

  • American Sign Language (ASL) Services
  • Early Language Acquisition Services (ELAS)

Visual Language Services enhances access to and improves language learning through visual language for families of Deaf and hard-of-hearing students, from birth to age five, and from kindergarten through 12th grade. It also aims to provide impartial language access and education for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students by offering instruction, assessments, and resources based on evidence-based practices and cultural awareness.

Visual Language Services is committed to delivering high-quality ASL instruction and comprehensive language learning to staff, parents, and students, including young children receiving Early Language Acquisition services, to support and expand their linguistic development.
