ASL Services

ASL services are designed to provide support, visual communication access, and visual language development for:

  • SCSDB staff and school personnel
  • Public school staff working with mainstreamed Deaf students
  • Deaf and hard-of-hearing students in K-12 settings

ASL services include:

  • Direct instruction tailored to staff and student needs
  • ASL Placement Assessments
  • Ongoing consulting support
  • Customized online courses with video-rich, interactive content
  • Use of ACTFL-aligned benchmarks and MLA standards

VLS provides placement assessments for individuals interested in ASL instruction. These assessments help determine signing skill levels using criteria such as:

  • Vocabulary knowledge (e.g. alphabet, colors, fingerspelling)

  • ASL grammar (handshape, palm orientation, non-manual signals)

  • Comprehension (yes/no questions, eye gaze, classifiers)

We also offer specialized ASL courses for school nurses, bus drivers, cafeteria staff, and campus safety officers. These are practical, scenario-based trainings that help staff communicate effectively in real-life school situations.
