Deaf and Hard of Hearing Consumers
Information for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Consumers
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires state and local governments as well as businesses and nonprofit organizations that serve the public to communicate effectively with the individuals they serve.
If you are an individual in need of an interpreter and you are entitled to one under the ADA, you should know:
- Interpreters with Statewide Interpreting Services meet or exceed guidelines set forth by the ADA.
- Often there is no cost to deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals as fees are paid for by the business or service provider.
- Contact the business (doctor's office, hospital, court, etc.) directly to request they provide an interpreter per Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. They can submit requests by emailing requests@scsdb.org or by calling 888-567-0980.
- Contact the South Carolina Association of the Deaf (SCAD) for your advocacy needs.
