Spartanburg Downtown Sertoma Club
Donates $10,000 for Hands-On Science Lab

SPARTANBURG, SC –  Students at the SC School for the Deaf will experience science first-hand next year thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Spartanburg Downtown Sertoma Club.

“Science classes for students who are deaf or hard of hearing need to be hands-on with plenty of things to touch and see,” said Ann Akerman, CEO of the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind Foundation. “The Sertomans’ donation will be used to purchase models, equipment, and materials that will demonstrate textbook concepts and encourage fascination with science.”

Materials to be purchased will enable students to experience the life cycle of chickens, visualize lung function, monitor blood pressure, experience plant growth, see models of human anatomy, learn about animal organs, and much more. Science teachers at the school hope to increase interest in science as well as career opportunities in the field.

“The students will be delighted to experience science with new hands-on materials,” said Page McCraw, president of the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind. “We are very grateful to Downtown Sertoma for this wonderful gift.”

“It has been our pleasure to help support the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind,” said Jeff Smith, immediate past president of the Spartanburg Downtown Sertoma Club. “Our club has a long history of helping the students at the school. Each year, our members enjoy sponsoring students to go to Camp Sertoma, shopping with the students at Christmas, and helping fund projects at the school.  I have been a member of the Downtown Sertoma Club for a long time, and creating that feeling of making a difference is what all civic clubs should strive for. As president this year, it was my pleasure to present a check for $10,000 to the school to help fund their science lab.”
