Graduation Ceremony will recognize outstanding students and community contributors

Graduates, outstanding students, and community contributors will be recognized at graduation on May 25 at 11 a.m. The ceremony will be held in Walker Hall’s Pulliam Auditorium.

Outstanding graduates from the School for the Deaf, School for the Blind, and Cedar Springs Academy will be announced during the ceremony. Norman F. Pulliam, Sr. will receive the Board of Commissioners' prestigious Douglas F. Dent award in recognition of his exceptional leadership. The school’s board will also present its Charitable Giving Award to Fluor Golf for Greenville. The award recognizes individuals or organizations that have provided financial support to the school at a leadership level.

Norman F. Pulliam, Sr.

Norman F. Pulliam, Sr. served on the school's Board of Commissioners for 20 years with 13 of those years as chairman. Following his service as a member of the school’s Board of Commissioners, Mr. Pulliam joined the Board of Trustees for the school’s fundraising arm, The Walker Foundation.

Under Mr. Pulliam’s leadership as board chairman, the school received numerous awards for academics, customer service, and employment of individuals with disabilities. Facilities were significantly improved with the renovation of academic, athletic, and arts facilities and the opening of new dormitories, library facilities, and playgrounds. Improvements in technology and safety were major initiatives.

As a member of The Walker Foundation Board, Mr. Pulliam worked tirelessly to encourage his associates to support the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind. In 2006, a scholarship fund was established in Mr. Pulliam’s honor. Since that time, the scholarship has helped many graduates with postsecondary and college expenses.

Fluor Golf for Greenville

In 1989, Fluor Corporation founded Golf for Greenville to engage the company’s employees and vendors in raising funds to support charities in Upstate South Carolina. The school’s fundraising arm, The Walker Foundation, was chosen as a beneficiary of the 2012 Golf Tournament resulting in a donation of more than $100,000 to support the construction of a new field house on the campus.

The Walker Foundation was also chosen as a beneficiary of the 2016 Golf Tournament providing a donation of almost $200,000 in support of the playground renovation projects.  A portion of this donation was allocated to the Cedar Springs Academy playground, which was completed in September 2016. The donation will also be used toward the School for the Deaf playground renovation expected to be completed in fall of 2017.
