Congratulations, Paul Watson!

SCSDB graduate Paul Watson received the statewide 2017 Employment Achievement Award!

Paul's employment coach Amelia England presented his award.
Paul Watson, a graduate of the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind, was awarded the statewide Employment Achievement Award. He was selected by the Governor's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, and received the award at a recent luncheon.

Paul was nominated for the award by the Spartanburg Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities. Both committees acknowledged Paul’s tenacity in developing work skills. That tenacity paid off with a great job at Green River Log Cabins.

At the luncheon, Paul thanked the organizations that had supported him. “I am honored to receive this award, and I appreciate the services I received from Vocational Rehabilitation,” he said. “I also appreciate Green River Log Cabins for taking a chance on me. I am very glad to be able to work in my chosen field.”

Paul began preparing for his dream job early by completing the carpentry program at R.D. Anderson Applied Technology Center while in high school at the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind. He went on to attain certification in building and construction through Greenville Technical College. As he studied, Paul worked part-time and volunteer jobs for several years.

Paul further demonstrated his drive and determination by completing an apprentice training program on site at Green River through the SC Department of Vocational Rehabilitation (VR). VR also provided training to Paul in developing a resume, interviewing, completing applications, and budgeting.

Paul’s employer, Green River Log Cabins, was recognized by the Mayor’s Committee for their leadership in employing individuals with disabilities. Green River partnered with VR to provide the job opportunity for Paul.

Paul is the son of Trudy Watson, who is an associate teacher in our School for the Deaf.

Paul was surrounded by family and friends from Vocational Rehabilitation following the luncheon.
