Sportsmanship and teamwork are stressed in our athletic programs. Some of our students’ favorite sports include:
Goalball: Created for athletes who are blind or visually impaired, goalball is played on a court slightly smaller than a basketball court. All of the players wear blindfolds so that no one will have a visual advantage. The players hurl a ball with a bell in it along the court floor as they attempt to roll it toward the other team’s baseline and score a goal.
Our girls and boys goalball teams compete with other Schools for the Blind in the United States Association for Blind Athletes as well as Eastern Association for the Blind tournaments.
Track and Field: Track and field are adapted to meet the needs of individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Track athletes team up with guide runners who use tethers to assist athletes who are blind or have little vision. If a track athlete has some vision, he may follow a guide runner wearing an easily seen colored shirt or run alongside the guide runner. Relay runners compete using audible cues from their teammates.
Shot put and discus athletes orient themselves using tactile throwing boundaries. Long jumpers and high jumpers may benefit from callers who call out location, counting steps, or the placement of brightly colored visual cues along the competition pathway.
The SC School for the Deaf and the Blind completes in the SC Region I Class A Conference, Mason-Dixon Tournament, and USA Deaf Track and Field.
Cheerleading: Our cheerleaders rev up the fans at all of our varsity football and basketball games. The varsity football cheer team season is August through October, and the basketball cheer season is November through February. Additional Sports Opportunities: School for the Blind students have the opportunity to try out for basketball, football, soccer, and volleyball. Team manager and assistant positions also offer good opportunities for School for the Blind students.
