     The Hearing Outreach Program provides South Carolina school districts with services for students who are deaf, hard of hearing or multidisabled with a hearing loss.  The program’s staff respects and is knowledgeable of all communication methods.  Instruction is provided in each student’s chosen communication methodology (oral, sign or tactile communication systems), and instruction in American Sign Language is available.

      State certified teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing are available to meet the students’ unique educational needs.  Consultation and direct instruction are provided utilizing methods and materials to help students achieve their educational goals.  Teachers are skilled in assessing each student’s educational and adaptive needs for the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs.

In collaboration with local school districts, Hearing Outreach teachers may:

  • Consult with parents, teachers, school staff, audiologists, medical staff and other professionals regarding the needs of identified students;

  • Evaluate and make recommendations for the use of assistive technology to maximize the student’s ability to acquire information auditorily;

  • Offer recommendations for acoustical modifications for classrooms to enhance the listening environment;

  • Provide mentoring for new teachers of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The following services are available statewide:

  • Individualized direct instruction;

  • Consultation services;

  • Assistive technology and acoustical modification consultations;

  • Workshops for local school districts;

  • Mentoring for new teachers of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

     The South Carolina Deaf/Hard of Hearing Education Partnership is a partnership of eleven stakeholders whose goal is to improve the quality of education for students, birth through young adulthood, who are deaf and hard of hearing in South Carolina so they can achieve successful outcomes.  The partnership stakeholders are: South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind, South Carolina

Vocational Rehabilitation Department, South Carolina Department of Education, South Carolina Association of the Deaf, Converse College, Clemson University, Spartanburg Community College, South Carolina Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, South Carolina AG Bell Association, Post Secondary Education Programs Network - South and SC DHEC First Sound Program.

     The Hearing Summit Conference is an annual conference sponsored by the South Carolina Deaf/Hard of Hearing Education Partnership to provide research-based information to individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing, their families, and the professionals who serve them.  It is the Partnership's goal that this annual conference will provide information that will lead to the the improvement of educational outcomes for students who are deaf and hard of hearing in the state of South Carolina. 

     South Carolina Department of Education Statewide Hearing Consultant
Through an agreement with the South Carolina Department of Education Office of Exceptional Children, training and technical assistance regarding the education of students who are deaf and hard of hearing is provided to school districts, parents, and administrators.
