Overview

The SC School for the Deaf and the Blind provides professional support services for its students and their families. Through the Health and Related Services Department, we strive to identify and meet the needs of our students, whether health-related, developmental or behavioral. The department’s goal is to provide a safe, welcoming environment for students so that they feel comfortable learning new ways to better understand themselves and to gain self-confidence and independence. 

Services

Health and Related Services include:

  • Speech-Language-Communication Therapy
  • Audiology
  • Counseling and Psychology
  • Behavior Services
Depending upon a student’s needs, services are provided throughout the student’s daily schedule. Our support specialists communicate and plan in conjunction with the student’s teachers and after-school caretakers so that each activity has appropriate focus. Service providers utilize the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) in evaluating and planning for the student. A student may have individual and/or group sessions, re-evaluations and re-assessments based upon consultations and evaluations between the student and the professional. Specialized Staff

Health and Related Services provides students with highly qualified, caring staff members who hold professional degrees in their service areas, and who have a wealth of education and experience. Each professional service provider holds a master’s degree or higher, and their assistants hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree.


Fees

Parents and families of students do not receive bills for health services at the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind. The school receives reimbursements for medical services through the SC Department of Health and Human Services “Partners for Healthy Children” program for Medicaid-eligible students.

Parents may have to pay for a student’s personal equipment or medications, but the staff works with families to identify private insurance or Medicaid funding when possible.
