About Us
The SC School for the Deaf and the Blind is the state’s only specialized school for students who are deaf or blind. The main campus is located in Spartanburg, but the school serves students throughout the state through its campus and outreach programs.

The work of the school is overseen by the school’s president and an all volunteer board of commissioners appointed by the governor. The 11 member board includes representatives of:

·         Each of the state’s seven congressional districts
·         Blind Community
·         Deaf Community
·         Sensory Multidisabled Community
·         State at Large

Ex officio board members include:

·         State Superintendent of Education
·         Commissioner of the Department of Health and Environmental Control

The SC School for the Deaf and the Blind is funded through state, federal and donor dollars. The school also receives fees for many of its outreach services.

The school’s private fund-raising arm is The Walker Foundation, a charitable 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Strategic Planning

The SC School for the Deaf and the Blind reviews its strategic plan on an annual basis and reports its accomplishments in a yearly accountability report.

The school’s mission is to ensure that the individuals we serve realize maximum success through high quality education programs, outreach services and partnerships.

The school’s long-term vision is to be the statewide leader in education and accessibility for individuals who are deaf, blind or sensory multi-disabled.

The SC School for the Deaf and the Blind was founded in 1849 by the Reverend Newton Pinckney Walker as a private school for students who were deaf. The School for the Blind was established in 1855, and the school became state funded in 1856. The Cedar Springs Academy was established in 1977, and the school began providing outreach services in the mid 1980s.
