Comporium Donates Vehicles to the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind

Rock Hill, SC/Spartanburg, SC – Comporium has come forward again to help the maintenance workers at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB).

Budget limitations have forced the school to delay the purchase of maintenance vehicles, and the result is that many of the maintenance workers are driving old, run-down vehicles.   Comporium is donating  a 1995 Chevrolet C-3500 truck, a 1995 Chevrolet S-10 truck and a 1988 Ford F-700 truck to SCSDB.  The donated vehicles will replace three pick-up trucks:  a 1969 Ford, a 1974 Dodge and a 1977 Dodge.  In January, 2005, Comporium donated a 1994 Chevrolet S-10 pick-up truck and a 1991 Chevrolet AstroVan to the school.

“We have maximized the use of our old 1970’s model trucks,” said SCSDB President Sheila Breitweiser.  “There are just not enough words to fully express how grateful we are to Comporium for once again donating the wonderful gift of vehicles to provide our maintenance crews with reliable transportation to keep things running smoothly for our students.”

The maintenance staff provides service for 38 buildings on the 160-acre main campus in Spartanburg. These trucks will increase the efficiency for the department by reducing downtime due to breakdowns and repairs.

Glenn McFadden, Comporium’s Executive Vice President of Operations, will present the vehicles to Heather Patchett, Executive Director of The Walker Foundation, the fund-raising arm for SCSDB; and, Jennifer Lauer, SCSDB Director of Human Resources, on Monday, April 2 at 10 a.m. at Comporium’s downtown location at 330 East Black Street, Rock Hill, SC.  Also attending for SCSDB will be Marie Horton, Director of Transportation; Charles Farr, Maintenance Supervisor; Tony Owens, Motor Pool Supervisor; and James Hunt, Shop Supervisor.

The SC School for the Deaf and the Blind is a specialized instructional and resource center.  It provides services statewide for individuals who are deaf, blind or sensory multidisabled, their families and the professionals who work with them.  SCSDB offers programs for preschool, elementary, middle school, high school, sensory multidisabled, vocational and postsecondary educational students, as well as a variety of outreach and support services. The main campus is located in Spartanburg, and regional centers are located throughout the state. SCSDB's Web site address is www.scsdb.org.
