Spartanburg, SC – Graduates of the first 2007 Leadership Development Program (LPD) at the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB) will be honored at a ceremony and reception at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 20, 2007, in Walker Hall on the SCSDB campus.  Mayor Bill Barnet will be the guest speaker.

            The Leadership Development Program is a multi-faceted approach to strengthen and develop the leadership capabilities of the SCSDB staff members.  The training includes coaching and mentoring, and provides a parallel training series for the participants’ supervisors and managers.  A group of 14 staff members were nominated by members of the school’s Administrative Team to participate in the year-long program.

            The project provided leadership training in Effective Leadership Skills; Team Building and Group Dynamics; Time Management; Strategic Thinking and Planning; Assertiveness in the Workplace; Effective Communication Skills; and Coaching and Mentoring.

            The class includes three participants who are blind and six participants who are deaf.  The graduates are:  Claire Bailey, Sign Language Coordinator; Frances Bass, Payroll Coordinator; Teresa Bird, Lead Teacher; Monique Callaham, Training Coordinator; Frances Gentry, Teacher Assistant; Micko Hughes, Dormitory Director; Clay Jeffcoat, Information Resource Consultant; Tammy Johnson, Family Support Specialist; Josh Joseph, Dormitory Director; Iosep MacDougall, Digital Arts Teacher; Tony Merriweather, Teacher Assistant; Jubby Rabiu, Human Services Coordinator; Cynthia Rhames, Counselor; Charles Washko, Quality Assurance Manager.

The SC Department of Education named SCSDB a Palmetto Gold School for its academic accomplishments and a Red Carpet School for its outstanding customer service.  SCSDB is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf and the SC Department of Education.  SCSDB offers programs for preschool, elementary, middle school, high school, sensory multidisabled, vocational and postsecondary education students, as well as a variety of outreach services through regional centers located throughout the state.
