Sanford Appoints Bob Morrow

SPARTANBURG, SC -- Governor Mark Sanford has appointed Bob Morrow to the Board of Commissioners of the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind. He will fill the open at-large seat representing the statewide deaf community.

Morrow retired from SCSDB as athletics director. During his 35 years on the SCSDB faculty, Morrow taught physical education, coached sports and directed athletics. He is a graduate of Gallaudet College, where he earned a bachelor’s in physical education, and Western Maryland College, where he completed a master’s in education.

Morrow first came to SCSDB when he enrolled as a student at age 13. He says that he immediately fell in love with the school. “I am still in love with it and will put my heart into the best interest of our students,” said Morrow.

An SCSDB graduate, Morrow is active in the school’s alumni association, volunteers for the Handicapped Athletes Learning To Enjoy Riding (HALTER) horseback riding program and serves on the planning committee for the new football stadium.

Morrow is married to Helen Morrow who teaches physical education in the school’s Division for the Deaf. He has three daughters: Cassandra who is majoring in Deaf education at Converse College, Miranda who is a senior at Spartanburg High School and Jonetta Prewitt who is the mother of his granddaughter, Brylee Prewitt.

Morrow succeeds Harry Culpepper, Sr. who served on the school’s board for more than 25 years. “While we are looking forward to Mr. Morrow’s capable service, we regrettably must say goodbye to former board member Harry Culpepper, who for more than 25 years provided devoted service to our beloved school,” said Sheila Breitweiser, SCSDB president. “We are especially grateful to Mr. Culpepper for his willingness to continue his service to the board for two full years beyond the end of his term allowing the governor the time needed to search for just the right person to become the new SCSDB Deaf At-Large Board member.”

The South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind is a specialized instructional and resource center. The South Carolina Department of Education named SCSDB a Palmetto Gold School for its academic accomplishments and a Red Carpet School for its outstanding customer service. SCSDB is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement, the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf and the South Carolina Department of Education. SCSDB offers programs for preschool, elementary, middle school, high school, sensory multidisabled, vocational and postsecondary education students, as well as a variety of outreach services through regional centers throughout the state.
