Spartanburg, SC   A student from Sumter has been named the 2008 Outstanding Senior for the School for the Multihandicapped.

            Loman Jermaine Brooks received the award during the commencement exercise at the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB) on May 28.  He is the son of Mrs. Rosa Lee Canty.

            Brooks attended SCSDB for 11 years during which time he worked diligently in his classes, continually had a positive attitude and was an outstanding ambassador for his school.  He received a perfect attendance award this year.

            He was very involved in athletics playing varsity football and basketball.  He was active in the Special Olympics athletics program and was a member of the gold-winning SCSDB soccer team that competed in the national 2006 Special Olympics Soccer games.          In addition to sports, Brooks was a member of the SCSDB Color Guard for five years and two musical performing groups, Brite Lights and Manual Transmission.

The SC Department of Education named SCSDB a Palmetto Gold School for its academic accomplishments and a Red Carpet School for its outstanding customer service.  SCSDB is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf and the SC Department of Education.  SCSDB offers programs for preschool, elementary, middle school, high school, sensory multidisabled, vocational and postsecondary education students, as well as a variety of outreach services through regional centers located throughout the state.
