Spartanburg, SC  Sheila S. Breitweiser received the Southeast Regional Institute on Deafness (SERID) 2007 Outstanding Educator of the Year Award.  It was presented at the SERID Conference “Driving into the Future” in Greenville, S.C.

            Breitweiser, president of the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB), was recognized for exemplifying the highest standard of  the educational profession and demonstrating extraordinary commitment to educational excellence for the education and welfare of deaf/hard-of-hearing persons.

            SERID provides educational and professional development for individuals who work with individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or deaf-blind.  It promotes collaboration between service providers and communities serving these individuals.  The organization represents Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.  The organization was founded in 1973 with the leadership of these states’ rehabilitation agencies, including the SC Vocational Rehabilitation Department.

The SC Department of Education named SCSDB a Palmetto Gold School for its academic accomplishments and a Red Carpet School for its outstanding customer service. 

SCSDB is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf and the SC Department of Education.  SCSDB offers programs for preschool, elementary, middle school, high school, sensory multidisabled, vocational and postsecondary education students, as well as a variety of outreach services through regional centers located throughout the state.
