Spartanburg – Only 30 students are selected nationwide to attend an international creative arts summer camp.  For the second consecutive year, five of those students are from the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind.

“These students have worked hard and their commitment to learning has resulted in a wonderful opportunity,” said SCSDB fine arts director, Chip Walters.  “They are very deserving of this honor.”

The students accepted to participate in the 2007 International Creative Arts Camp are from the school’s Division for the Deaf.  The week-long program held at the International Center on Deafness in the Arts (ICODA) in Chicago, Ill. begins June 22.  The students will study with professional artists in their chosen discipline.

Application requirements included submission of an essay, photos or videos of their work and letters of recommendation.  The five SCSDB students by category are:   visual arts - Cathy Ceva of Pauline, Mary Mang of Una, and Kendra Frazier of Boiling Springs; drama – Christopher Simons of Spartanburg; dance – Meggan Simons of Spartanburg.

"We are extremely proud of these very talented students, and are thrilled that they will have the opportunity to expand their artistic skills," said Debbie Bruce, principal of The school’s Division for the Deaf.

The SC Department of Education named SCSDB a Palmetto Gold School for its academic accomplishments and a Red Carpet School for its outstanding customer service.  SCSDB is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf and the SC Department of Education.  SCSDB offers programs for preschool, elementary, middle school, high school, sensory multidisabled, vocational and postsecondary education students, as well as a variety of outreach services through regional centers located throughout the state.
