Outstanding students at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB) and organizations that support the school will be honored at SCSDB’s school-wide awards day program on May 14. The program begins at 10 a.m. in the Pulliam Auditorium of Walker Hall.

Students receiving Governor’s Citizenship, American Legion, residential, arts and athletics awards will be honored. The Baron Holmes and Ruth Joan Millard Scholarships will be presented, and the Teacher of the Year will be named.

Two Hearts and Hands Awards will be given at the recognition event.  This award was established in 1997 to recognize community organizations and institutions that have benefited SCSDB students either through direct contributions to the students or by enabling the improvement of SCSDB facilities and programs.

BMW Manufacturing Company will receive a Hearts and Hands Award for their contributions to SCSDB through the Walker Foundation, the school’s fund-raising arm. The Walker Foundation has been a designated charity in the BMW Pro-Am Golf Tournament for several years, including this year. BMW has contributed more than $37,000 to the school and provided a BMW for a weekend as an incentive for the school’s United Way Campaign and other fund raising events.

The second Hearts and Hands Award will be presented to the Master Kim’s World Class Tae Kwon Do Academy in Greenville. The Academy has sponsored a board breaking event for three years, including this year, to benefit the school through the Walker Foundation.  The Academy has raised more than $25,000 and expects to raise more than $18,000 this year. Their contributions have been used to purchase mattresses and other furnishings for dormitory students.  The Kims are wonderful advocates for the school in the Greenville area and generously donate Tae Kwan Do lessons to auctions benefiting the school  and work closely with local Lions Clubs to benefit SCSDB.

“We are grateful to both of these organizations for the generous contributions they make and for the community awareness they bring to the school,” said Sheila Breitweiser, SCSDB president.

The SC Department of Education named SCSDB a Palmetto Gold School for its academic accomplishments and a Red Carpet School for its outstanding customer service. SCSDB is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf and the SC Department of Education. SCSDB offers programs for preschool, elementary, middle school, high school, sensory multidisabled, vocational and postsecondary education students, as well as a variety of outreach services through regional centers throughout the state. The main campus is in Spartanburg. The school’s web site address is www.scsdb.org and its toll-free number is 1-888-447-2731.
