SPARTANBURG — The South
Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB)
Board of Commissioners announces new officers for 2007. The all-volunteer
board, appointed by the governor, serves the only specialized school in the
state for individuals who are deaf, blind or sensory multihandicapped and
provides services to all 46 counties.
Elected to serve as officers of the Board of Commissioners are: Cindy
Holland of Spartanburg, chairman; Ashton Cribbs,
III, of Columbia,
vice chairman; and Harry Culpepper, Sr., of Belton, secretary. These three officers comprise the Executive
Committee of the SCSDB Board of Commissioners.
Holland has served on the SCSDB
Board of Commissioners since 1993 — as secretary from 1995-2005 and as vice
chairman for the past year. She is part
owner of Dottie’s Toffie. A graduate of Wofford College (B.A.) and Converse College
(M.Ed.), Holland
has worked as a public school teacher, higher education administrator and
community volunteer.
Cribbs retired from South Trust Bank in Columbia, SC,
in 2005. A graduate of Furman University, he is a past board member of the South
Carolina Bankers Association, the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, the Columbia
Downtown Association, the Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington, and the
Salvation Army. He has served on the SCSDB Board of Commissioners since 1990.
Culpepper has served on the SCSDB Board of Commissioners since 1981. He
graduated from SCSDB in 1971 and worked as a printer at Belton Printing, Inc.
He is a member and former president of the South Carolina Association of the
Deaf and a lifetime member of the South
Carolina School
for the Deaf Alumni Association. He is co-founder of the South Carolina Deaf
Golf Association.
The SC School for the Deaf and the Blind is a
specialized instructional and resource center. It provides services statewide
for individuals who are deaf, blind or sensory multidisabled, their families
and the professionals who work with them. SCSDB offers programs for preschool,
elementary, middle school, high school, sensory multidisabled, vocational and
postsecondary educational students, as well as a variety of outreach and
support services. The main campus is located in Spartanburg, and regional centers are located
throughout the state. SCSDB's Web site address is www.scsdb.k12.sc.us.
