COLUMBIA – Student performers and national championship athletes from the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB) will be special guests of the SC General Assembly on Wednesday, January 24.

            Student performers from the Spartanburg campus will entertain in the House of Representatives during the 2 p.m. session.  The group, who will be introduced by Rep. Scott Talley, will perform the songs “When You Wish Upon A Star” and “I Am A Promise.”  The group of performers is comprised of students from the Division for the Blind, the Division for the Deaf and the Division for the Multihandicapped. 

Norman Pulliam, retired chairman of the SCSDB Board of Commissioners, will be recognized for his 20 years of service on the Board, serving as chairman for 13 years.  He retired from the SCSDB board upon his appointment by Governor Sanford to the board of the SC Department of Natural Resources. 

            Cindy Holland, the newly elected SCSDB Board of Commissioners chairman, will also be recognized.  She has served on the board since 1993 as secretary from 1995-2005 and as vice chairman for the past year.  

            Members of the SCSDB School Improvement Council (SIC), the SCSDB Board of Commissioners and The Walker Foundation Board of Trustees will be in attendance to enjoy the students’ performance.

 During the Senate session at approximately 3:00 p.m., Sen. John Hawkins will introduce the SCSDB Boys’ Goalball Team, who for the second consecutive year, won the United States Association of Blind Athletes (USABA) Youth National Goalball championship.  The school’s Special Olympics Soccer Team will be recognized for winning the first-ever National Special Olympics Soccer championship in addition to two award-winning gymnasts.   Pulliam and Holland will also be introduced by Hawkins.

             The SC School for the Deaf and the Blind is a specialized instructional and resource center. It provides services statewide for individuals who are deaf, blind or sensory multidisabled, their families and the professionals who work with them. SCSDB offers programs for preschool, elementary, middle school, high school, sensory multidisabled, vocational and postsecondary educational students, as well as a variety of outreach and support services.
