Award-Winning Artist to Visit SCSDB

SPARTANBURG   Artist Paul Sires of Charlotte, NC will hang two of his sculptures and speak to an art class beginning at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 22 in Walker Hall at the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB).

The sculptures were donated anonymously to the school’s Walker Foundation to begin a touchable art collection for SCSDB .  This collection will allow everyone, even individuals who are blind or visually impaired, to experience art by touch.   Sires will discuss his sculptures with the students explaining how he created his works of art.

Sires is a pioneer of the Historic North Charlotte Arts District, and is co-owner of the Center of the Earth Gallery, a gallery for contemporary art.  The gallery was recognized with a Governor’s Award for Businesses in the Arts for its impact on the City of Charlotte.  He sculpted the bench recently installed in Spartanburg’s Morgan Square.  More information is available at www.centeroftheearth.com.

The SC School for the Deaf and the Blind is a specialized instructional and resource center. It provides services statewide for individuals who are deaf, blind or sensory multidisabled, their families and the professionals who work with them. SCSDB offers programs for preschool, elementary, middle school, high school, sensory multidisabled, vocational and postsecondary educational students, as well as a variety of outreach and support services. The main campus is located in Spartanburg, and regional centers are located throughout the state. SCSDB's Web site address is www.scsdb.k12.sc.us.
