SPARTANBURG – Churches and daycare centers may be looking for a good cause for their 15-passenger vans, now that Jacob’s Law requires children to be transported in federally-regulated buses. And, the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind might just be the perfect cause.

The school is hoping to obtain donated vans for use in its service departments.  The school’s housekeeping department uses old vans to move equipment across the 160-acre campus. Its maintenance department converts older vans into moving tools sheds that can quickly meet multiple requests in the school’s 38 buildings.  The transportation department uses vans to transport tools and staff to school bus breakdown sites.  Technology and media departments also use vans to deliver all types of equipment to classrooms, labs and offices.

“Older vans are still very useful for use with maintenance needs in our campus environment,” said Jennifer Lauer, director of Human Resources and Safety. SCSDB

currently has four vans used by the housekeeping and maintenance departments.  These vans all have clocked more than 200,000 miles and one is 20 years old.

“We have maximized the use of our service vehicles and it would be wonderful if our facilities employees, who work so hard to keep things running smoothly for the students, could have more reliable vehicles,” said Lauer.

Persons interested in donating a van or other vehicle may call the Walker Foundation (864) 577-7582 for details.  The Walker Foundation is the schools’s fund-raising arm.

The SC School for the Deaf and the Blind is a specialized instructional and resource center. It provides services statewide for individuals who are deaf, blind or sensory multidisabled, their families and the professionals who work with them. SCSDB offers programs for preschool, elementary, middle school, high school, sensory multidisabled, vocational and postsecondary educational students, as well as a variety of outreach and support services. The main campus is located in Spartanburg, and regional centers are located throughout the state. SCSDB's Web site address is www.scsdb.k12.sc.us.
