We are eager to share the SCSDB education experience with you and your child. The following checklist outlines the information we need to consider your child for enrollment. Once you have completed all of the paperwork, the application process takes about 4-6 weeks. If you need help completing the application process, please contact the SCSDB admissions office. Because of state attendance laws, we recommend that students who are applying to attend SCSDB remain enrolled in school until they can begin classes at SCSDB.

Is your child eligible to attend SCSDB?
SCSDB enrolls students based on the following requirements:
•  SC residency - families must provide evidence of SC residence.
•  Hearing loss or vision loss - the student’s sensory disability must be educationally significant.
•  Cognitive ability - students must be able to show progress in our educational setting.
•  Behavior - SCSDB only accepts students who pose no risk of harm to either themselves or to others.  High management behavior students are ineligible.

The SCSDB Admissions Eligibility Team complies with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and carefully evaluates each student’s application on an individual basis. Although all admissions decisions must meet the SC State Department of Education Plan, SCSDB uses no single test or criterion to determine eligibility.

SCSDB’s highly qualified team of principals and administrative staff determine a student’s acceptance into either the School for the Deaf, the School for the Blind or the School for the Multihandicapped. They want to make sure SCSDB’s educational environment is a good fit for your child, so enrollment decisions are based primarily on the school’s ability to provide a program that will meet your child’s individual academic needs.

What type of cost is involved in the preschool-grade 12 program?
SCSDB receives state, federal and private funding that allows us to offer a free, appropriate public education to children with disabilities.  Like most public schools, SCSDB does request that families pay a $40 student fee to help cover the cost of student field trips and activities. Parents also provide basic clothing, toiletries and school supplies for their children. Families receive a list of necessary items at the first Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meeting.

SCSDB is a public school of choice, which means that parents of students who have sensory disabilities may choose SCSDB or their local public school district to educate their children. There are valid reasons for choosing both options. SCSDB, however, is uniquely qualified to meet the special needs of students with sensory disabilities.
