A tour through the School for the Deaf reveals small classes, experienced and enthusiastic teachers, talented support staff, role models who are deaf and, above all, students ready and eager to learn. Educational programs in the School for the Deaf range from preschool through high school and are tailored to meet the needs of each student — from programs for the academically talented to programs for students with learning challenges.

The School for the Deaf has its own fully equipped and networked computer labs in the elementary, middle and high schools as well as educational video equipment in the classrooms. Students benefit from SCSDB’s comprehensive selection of support services such as speech and language therapy, audiology, psychology and counseling as well as physical and occupational therapy if needed. The School for the Deaf promotes an individualized communication approach to meet the language needs of the students. This approach includes the use of American Sign Language as well as auditory-oral instruction.

Reverse Mainstream Preschool
SCSDB’s preschool program promotes reverse mainstreaming. Students who are hearing and meet the criteria are allowed to enter the program. Our goal is to provide preschoolers who are deaf or hearing with a language-enriched environment through interactions with each other and to stimulate their social and academic development.

Educational Program
The School for the Deaf on-campus instructional program follows state standards that provide the instructional objectives for all South Carolina public schools.  Students enrolled in these programs become eligible for either a SC state high school diploma or certificate, depending on the type of program completed

Applied Training Program
For students who prefer to pursue a job after graduation, the School for the Deaf and the Career and Technology Education Department offer an applied training program focusing on practical skills such as functional job skills, career awareness and independent living.  Students who complete the program will earn an Occupational Education Diploma.

After-School Program
In addition to the traditional educational programs offered during the day, students enjoy recreational and leisure time learning opportunities during after-school hours. Through special instruction, SCSDB students are taught skills in athletics, music and drama, independent living, values and leisure activities.

Children at Graduation

The Palmetto Achievement Academy (PAA) has been designed for serving preschool - 5th grade students who are deaf. The school’s goal is to improve student academic achievement significantly through higher expectations and positive behavior support.

Staff
The Palmetto Achievement Academy team believes a highly trained staff makes for a highly educated student body. Every PAA class has a low teacher-student ratio with assistance from teacher associates. All teachers in the PAA are certified in deaf education through the SC Department of Education, and many of the teaching staff hold advanced degrees.

All teachers are provided with continuous, extensive training in order to implement a best practices model for instruction and behavior management. All of the teachers are proficient in sign communication.
The entire school day staff has a close working relationship with the residential life staff to create a cohesive 24-hour model.

Program Goals

1.      Students will read on or above grade level.

2.      A positive behavior support program, high academic standards and a rigorous individuals who are deaf than research statistics indicate.

3.      Parents will be integrally involved in their child’s program and progress.

Curriculum
The Palmetto Achievement Academy sets high standards for its students and includes the SC State Standards and the state-adopted textbooks in the curricula.
The S.C. State Standards are the curriculum standards for all K-12 students in South Carolina. They align with the Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test (PACT).
In addition to the core subjects, students receive instruction in the arts and technology. The PAA staff works with the fine arts teacher who infuses both visual and performing arts into daily instruction. Technology instruction is provided through the Career and Technology Education program.
The PAA is developing two additional programs – service learning and mentoring. Through service learning, students volunteer to help others in the community. The mentoring program pairs role models who are deaf with students.

Behavior
The PAA staff knows that good behavior and the ability to learn go hand in hand.
A full-time behavior specialist works with students, faculty, Residential Life staff and parents to promote  positive relationships and maintain family support.
Residential Life staff and teacher associates are being trained in the principles and practices of positive behavior support.
Parental involvement is also important to help their students achieve their highest level of success. Parents will be kept informed of their students’ progress and encouraged to participate on teams and committees.
