On a tour through the School for the Blind, you will find students using the latest educational technology that is designed to meet their accessibility needs. Students participate in a variety of programs so they may be rehearsing for a concert, running track or even horseback riding.  Interacting on a regular basis with successful adults who are blind increases confidence and enhances social skills.

Educational Program
The School for the Blind on-campus instructional program follows state standards that provide instructional objectives for all South Carolina public schools. Students enrolled in these programs become eligible for either a SC state high school diploma or certificate, depending on the type of program completed. Small classes and individualized instruction allow students to excel at their own pace.

Students in Keyboarding Class

In addition to the traditional instructional programs, students receive a variety of special instructional services, including braille, vocational training, independent living skills, and physical and health education.  The School for the Blind students have access to additional support services including orientation and mobility training, low vision training, access technology training, and physical, occupational and speech therapy.

Preschool/Elementary Program
The School for the Blind follows a curriculum specifically designed for students who are visually impaired as well as the curriculum in nearby public kindergartens and elementary schools. The preschool/elementary program begins by building students’ self-confidence, improving fine and gross motor skills, and providing introduction to braille and mobility training. Older students develop skills in language arts, reading, math, science, self-organization, fine arts, health and social studies. The program provides a foundation for full or part-time mainstream or academic classes, or for entrance into the Occupational Education Program.

Occupational Education Program
The Occupational Education Program is designed for middle and high school students who have more than one disability and who might have difficulty in a regular academic program. The program offers students an opportunity to set achievable work goals, make career decisions and learn citizenship skills. Course work includes applied math, communication and science. The program provides internship experience both on campus and in the local community.

The After-School Program
School for the Blind students are offered an extensive after-school program. The program was designed to enhance the school day and is open to both residential and non-residential students. In addition to a study hall staffed by certified teachers, students are offered the opportunity to participate in classes, independent living skills, sports and recreational programs, music and drama and technology training.
