The South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB) offers individuals, preschool through adulthood, five major educational programs from its Spartanburg, SC, campus.

To meet the varied needs of a diverse student body, SCSDB offers additional support services on an individual basis. Small classes encourage a focus on individual needs, and promote close, positive faculty-student relationships.
SCSDB’s faculty and staff are leaders in their fields. Many speak at conferences, teach professional classes or publish research in educational journals. In addition to receiving certification in their subject areas, all SCSDB teachers have specialized training in working with students who are sensory disabled.

Students in each of SCSDB’s educational programs have ready access to computer technology and specialized adaptive and assistive equipment. More importantly, they receive the expert instruction necessary to use these learning and living aids effectively.
Students attending SCSDB find ample opportunities for academic success. Science fairs, writing contests, academic competitions, field trips and art shows build intellectual curiosity and give students a sense of accomplishment.

Special Educational Opportunities
Each student who attends SCSDB has an individualized education program (IEP). While some students attend SCSDB for their entire school career, others benefit more from a shorter enrollment period. Still others enjoy the specialized assistance of SCSDB while attending public schools
Many students take advantage of SCSDB’s 24-hour-a-day educational opportunities. The after-school program enhances the school day and is open to both residential and non-residential students. In addition to after-school study halls staffed by certified teachers, students are offered opportunities to participate in classes, sports and recreational programs such as music lessons, ballet, art, drama, gardening, swimming, technology exploration and gymnastics — just to name a few.

School Accountability Report Card
The South Carolina Department of Education has named SCSDB a Palmetto Gold School for the sixth consecutive year. To receive this recognition, SCSDB earned excellent rankings on both the “absolute rating” and the “improvement rating” on the state’s school accountability report card.

Accreditations
SCSDB is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools/Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACSCASI), the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf (CEASD) and the SC Department of Education (SDE).
